London Design Festival.

The London Design Fair hosts the largest collection of international exhibitions, designers, brands, country pavilions, features and exhibitions in one destination during the London Design Festival.

The London Design Festival is a world renowned collection of expressive design, and thought provoking artistry. The dictionary defines the term Design as being, ‘A plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment, or other object before it is made.’ This was shown in the building its-self where the fair was held, with its open plan, and cold colour scheme which allowed the art to stand with eye catching style and beauty. The Design Fair held three floors all showing a mix of old techniques and new approach to what it means to build and make.

Looking around the three floors of the building I was struck by the creative energy of the artists and sellers who had a wealth of knowledge and eagerness to share the process from idea, to final product. One of the first artist I spoke to was Kate Trouw, her sculptural, bespoke jewellery pieces are created using polymer clay. She talked me through her process where she would design her shapes and blend her colours with gradients in mind, her beautiful works can take up to three to four hours to make, including baking the clay. Her work is unlike anything I have seen before, with bold shapes, and organic textures it has given me inspiration as to the simple yet beautiful.

One of the final artist that I was able to talk to was Jessica Light, who is one of the last working trimming weavers left in England. Her art installation was very simple but it caught my eye as soon as I came around the corner to look at her work. On one side of her block she had black thread left dangling, lip, lifeless. After talking to her for a little while she explained how there are only a handful of people left who work in her medium and how her art was dying out. She explained how her installation was in mourning as after she retires she is unsure who will carry on the craft. This got me thinking about how I can study the craft and blend her styles and techniques with textiles, and other mediums to give life into a dying art. received_1315872621757651
