Open Competition Brief for Students:

  • 2013 marks 30th anniversary of Pewter Live. In homage to this the Committee have set the challenge of producing an item, or range of items, that evoke a celebration, be it a wedding, christening, winning a competition, or gaining a degree.
  • The judges are looking for a new slant on traditional items. Imagine aiming your item at a retailer such as John Lewis or Selfridges. What is going to make your piece stand out?
  • We encourage mixed media, although the item must by at least 50% pewter. The judges are looking for high quality pieces whether they are a one off designer item or something that could be mass-produced.
  • The judges will consider the quality, originality, suitability for purpose and marketability of the submission. Consideration will also be given to the possibility of large-scale production rather than a one off. The item can be any size, although for large scale pieces please liaise with the Company regarding transport/display.

Decorative Arts Interior, Exterior, and Furniture:

  • Students are asked to design a pewter item for the gift market or other commercial or residential use. The design could either be functional, experimental, or merely decorative. Look at the market, think of John Lewis or Heals, make it a commercial desirable product, so think about retail price up to £250 pounds or more.
  • The judges are seeking originality, beauty, and innovation – What do people need/want, at the moment? Think about lifestyle trends and functionality. Consider the visual benefits derived from the integration and use of colour to complement and enhance pewter, using additional materials as appropriate- but the final item must be made predominantly of pewter. Consideration should be given to the possibility and practicality of large-scale production.
  • The presentation / packaging of the final submission should be also considered. A flower in a flower vase or cards in a card case, perhaps.

I am a Third year student at Cardiff School of Art and Design, studying Artist Designer: Maker. In this blog I will document my making process as I look deep into the subtly of colour through material, and how using luxury materials, such as porcelain and silk, can create delicate work with the overarching theme of Yonic informing my practice.
